Laurie Black’s ‘Angst Music’ is an Experimental Punk Mix of Rock, Pop & Electronica

Laurie Black launches her electro-rock avatar with her debut album, ‘Angst Music’. The album features reverent rock styles alongside experimental and modern electric punk sensibilities. This is the artist’s sonic alter-ego, that channels the chaotic explorations and defiance of convention. Laurie is otherwise a classically trained pianist who regularly puts on award winning solo shows like ‘Bad Luck Cabaret (2016)’ ‘Laurie Black: Space Cadette (2019)’ among others. However, with this album, she strives to create and present a whole new spectrum of her artistry.

Angst Music is a collection of nine songs. Across the album, she bootstraps rock variations with drastic electronic sensibilities. ‘Content Warning’ introduces the album. With incredible fusions of visual synths and distorting rock, she sparks a commentary on the content-powered epoch that we are currently living in.

‘Work When Ur Dead’ is a driving punk mix. It is youthful in its narrative, branding work and jobs as thieves of life. With jagged and brash textures, the track shivers with chaos and dark whimsy. Tracks like ‘Body Mod’ ‘Space Junk’  and ‘Angst Music’ are branded with similar sonic themes of rigorous rhythm, insurgent floods, and chronic electronic shocks. The artist extrapolates modern facets of everyday life, and develops it with futuristic notions.

‘Strange Fruit’ is flush with 00s indie rock and synth textures. These colorful sonic fruits are contained within a world of warping electronica. And shimmers with avid exotic sensibilities.

‘Moonstruator’ is a badass backlash track that celebrates all the essence and manifestations of womanhood. It is astounding how effectively she articulates thematic energy and mood frames with sound. Listening to the layers unravel, we are alerted to the intellectual depths and ruminations of the artist. This celestial themed piece on femininity is revisited in ‘Queen Solstice’, featuring Nighteyes. With soft tinsel vocals, Laurie navigates a reverberating world of electronica.

‘Scars’ has a powerful presence. It is arresting in its ethereal sensibilities. Laurie’s vocals lead the soundscape, with all its synth beams, cracking basses, fluid melodies, and punching beats. We even see some piano acoustics thrown into the mix. Dark clouds form, but from it, the artist draws out reassuring narratives. Driving the universality of the theme to the forefront, she promotes self-love as a cosmic mandate.

The album is available for streaming on popular sites like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music!
