Album Feature : Sarah Lucie’s ‘Light in the Dark’
INTERVIEW
What paved the way for you to create this collection and how does it play into your artistic ethos/ essence as a whole?
Coming home to my authentic self and discovering who I really am are at the core of this creation. I suppressed my voice for most of my life, despite loving singing more than anything, because I didn't think that my voice had any value. It is not a traditional voice, and it took me a long time to love it and appreciate the fact that its differentness is a beautiful thing.
I discovered that my voice has the power to heal, first myself and then others. I also discovered my ability to channel from a higher consciousness - both the words and the essence of the songs themselves. I didn't set out to create an album, it's like the songs found their way to me and through me because they needed to be expressed and heard. It is my mission on this planet to ignite the world with love through my voice, and this album was the starting point. This is your debut album! Tell us a little bit about your journey making it, and some of the biggest challenges you faced while doing it.
The journey of creating this album was more about me and less about the songs themselves. Creating them felt quite natural and I was in flow throughout the whole process. The challenge (and beauty) of it all was learning how to dig deeper into my own essence - to bring more of myself into the world and to allow myself to be seen.Your music traces hope and positivity in the experiences of life. It’s a beautiful endeavor, one that you do so naturally and authentically. What do you want your listeners to take away from this collection?
Thank you. I believe that all experiences can be viewed in a positive light. It's all a matter of perspective, and it took me a long time to understand that we create our own reality. When I began to live into the truth that every "bad" thing that happens "to" us is truly happening FOR us, everything shifted. I was in so much pain while writing the majority of these songs, and through each of those experiences, I was able to find gratitude, and trusted that every single piece of pain I felt served me. It is my deepest desire that these songs will bring listeners into closer alignment with these truths, and the truth of who they really are.The song titles flesh out affecting brackets of emotion. What sparked their names and how does it help the listeners to appreciate the message more?
The titles were channeled to me, the same way that the songs were. I didn't put any conscious thought into how the names will help listeners connect or appreciate the songs more - rather, I felt into what was right and true. I trust that they are as they're meant to be.Your style traverses dimensions of folk, contemporary pop, and neo-classicals. How did you arrive at your sound and who are some of the artists that influenced and helped shape your style?
The music I listen to is quite different than the songs I compose. Because of that, it's hard to trace back any specific artistic influences to the creation of this album. The music I listen to makes me FEEL, and that is the common element between my taste and my own compositions. I arrived at the sound quite organically - I don't ever feel as though I made a conscious choice about the way I wanted something to sound. My desire was to capture what was coming from beyond me.Can you tell us about your future projects/ releases that you’re working on?
In addition to my work as a singer/songwriter, I am a healer, and I work with clients 1:1 and in group settings, using my voice to heal. When I'm working on someone, I channel songs, sounds, and chants, and it's unique each time. What I feel most drawn to creating right now is somewhere between a live channeled sound (like when I am in a session) and a fully composed song - I'm calling them vocal meditations. I'm excited to see where it takes me.
REVIEW
You’ll see it reflected in tracks like ‘Find Your Light’, ‘Becoming’ and ‘Take My Hand’. All so beautifully acoustical with vocals that trace transitional periods with remarkable grace and sense of self. Her vocals are fluid and open, a stark contrast to the floating darkness around. And with lyrical progression, it’s beautiful to see how the darkness turns into dawn and then brightens up into the morning.
The tracks are tailored to self-affirm in the process of healing. ‘I’m Alive’ and ‘What’s Your Name’ celebrate with wondrous blooms that meditate on the power of the present, the beauty of being alive; leaving you with the feeling of space and perspective. Each track is a nuanced blend of piano acoustics and leaves of storytelling. Bare and minimalistic, they are composed to draw attention to the depth and peak of Sarah’s vocals. It is the orb, the glistening pearl at the bottom of the ocean, the source of light and power.
In tracks like ‘Beneath The Pain’ and ‘Not Today’ draw you to them. There’s so much life, experience, and perspective built into it. It compels you to feel, to flow, and to fly. That sense of fluidity is evoked with an authentic abundance. Even if you’re not focusing on the lyrics, the emotion is there, forming in you. And maybe you can find articulation in it that you cannot find in yourself. It’s a very beautiful experience; one that you definitely want to be a part of. Listen Now!
