Seafarers’ ‘Another State’ : A Fresh Chamber Pop Color

Seafarers, much like their name, are fluid artists who float along the alternative plane of music. The result is a novel pop craft and experience of cultures that elate and refresh the mind. Imagine a blend of The Neighbours with A Great Big World, and Phoebe Bridgers. The six member group collaborate to bring many stylistic influences into their compositions. Bedroom pop, alt folk, chamber pop, dreamy accents, and contemporary flows, all so deliberately lithe and effortless. Their latest release is ‘Another State’, a collection that tells such tales from specific homegrown frames. It feels intimate, personal, and warm, like witnessing a friend go through it, and sometimes you’ll even find yourself reflected within it.

‘Bedwetters’ introduces the album, a mellow chamber pop that is vivid without being emphatic. Pastel melodies mingle with the airy vocals to keep it crisp and sweet. The title track follows. It is plush with dream pop streaks. With vocals that caress you lightly and acoustics that infuse a dispersing warmth, the sonic design is reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens.

The vocals have a piercing softness to it. So tender, earnest and aching for answers. The tone is one of youth, seeking for answers in ways that are vulnerable and expressive. In Televangelists’, the protagonist describes the erosion of life in the wake of tv show addictions. ‘Melissa’ tells the story of a small town girl and her journey out into the world. Entwined with melancholy and heartache, it is world weary. The manifestation of chamber pop is especially affecting in this composition; with violins and piano pieces flitting just as evocatively as the vocals.

‘Everything I’d Do (to get a Hold on you)’ carries the melancholy into a new sphere, of feeling helpless and desperate in love. The alt folk style is dominant in the slow pace of the rhythm and the spare instrumentals. ‘Crashing Cars’ is up next. The acoustics are designed to pave the way for the vocals. Pausing, pulsing, and pre-empting, it’s beautiful how they set the tone for the flow of the tale.

‘Anyone Else’ is more up the alley of BØRNS and Hozier. With soft melodic bobs, faint sparkles, and asymmetric acoustic notes, it is so delightfully novel. ‘Tiny Itch’ is quirky, nerdy, and so subtly defiant. ‘Tough Kids’ has been wired with childhood nostalgia which then journeys to an exhilarating indie rock climax. And concluding is ‘A Little Loss’ is a soft novella of sorts, full of vocal trinkets across a glimmering backdrop. There is a charm in how the band conceives compositions. While the tracks have common elements, they loop into a continuum that reveal a greater thematic picture. Listen Now!
