SQWERV Revels in Refreshing Blue Tones in Latest EP ‘Hors d’Oeuvres Part I’

SQWERV is an American indie/jam band that forge their own realities and fantasies when it comes to music. To fully enjoy their music, you need to relinquish everything you know, step out of the zone of familiarity and go with the flow. They work at the seams to gradually infuse a fresh chromatic value to their sonic environments. Focusing on a brand of psychedelic rock that enforces experimental elements, lofi and ambient dynamics on funk and blues, they claim a niche that is quite rare. Their latest release is a three track EP. It is the first part of the ‘Hors d’Oeuvres’ project. Tinged with iridescent blue tones, all the compositions cast a tranquil aura and an enticing clarity that is reminiscent of an oasis.

The collection opens with ‘Miami’. You’ll instantly sense the water energy surge around you. Gentle and playful licks of melody float to the surface like bubbles. The ethereal resonance encompassing it will make you feel like you’re underwater. But it’s pleasant, natural and explorative. Other chromatic melodies streak past like fishes and flint like jellyfish. It is very visual, meditative and powerfully creative.

‘Honolulu Blue’ is the perfect summer song. It is the bright, well lit ocean on a sunny day. And as you streak past in your ice blue convertible, the melodies open up as warm and immense as the cerulean skies. The band uses a lot of monophonic lines and string a dazing continuum; textured only with small pieces of light sonics. An electric guitar twists through the soundscape, intensely and passionately. With its intricate inflections and spilling emotions, it is as expressive as a vocal line might have been.

‘Jada’ concludes the tripartite collection. It is a hypnotic spiral that rides into an ambient oblivion. This track draws attention to the contemplative essence of the band. Mellow piano melodies are given a glassy shimmer, a mystical echo. And this naturally leads us to xylophone arcs infused with bird sound examples and stumbling onto a secret waterfall energy. The band references the 60s and 70s era where experimental music was at its peak. They revive and celebrate it. Drawn from retro and influenced by modernity, their music is a cerebral paradise that you never want to leave. Within their instrumental tides of this collection, there’s a current that sways you. Listen Now!
