Simon Maggs Douses Us With Folk Poetry in Debut EP, ‘The Art of Being Alone’

Simon Maggs is an indie folk artist based in North England. The artist loves to craft a layered narrative with his tracks. So, in essence, his songs are like a portrait that reveals more the more time you spend with it. And with slice-of-life lyricism doused in poetry, the soundscapes are incredibly interactive, playing out as it goes. The lifelike frames and resonant acoustic blooms are redolent of artists like Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Elliott Smith. Simon Maggs has just released his debut EP titled ‘The Art of Being Alone’. Across four tracks, he delves into contemplative spaces that draw values, about belonging and not belongings, out of anecdotes, encounters, and experiences.

The EP opens with ‘Bookshop Sunset’. It is an alt folk dream, accentuated by twinkling blues, drawling baritones, and rustic acoustics. It recounts a love story, comparing the experience to a whirlwind of romance, fantasy, reality, imaginary, non-fiction. The soundscape is as surreal as it sounds, drenched in dazing sensibilities and melancholic sentiments.

Next up is the title track. It is very retro in its instrumental setting. The guitar plays a more prominent role in the track., each note floated with so much emotional detail. And you can spot references to Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles in the way he expressed the blues. ‘After The Grand’ is up next. Weaved with blooming acoustic blues, the lyricism is very vintage and nostalgic. The track is filtered through films of romance, youth, love and heartache, it is laden with bittersweet feelings.

‘Last Man Standing’ concludes the EP with upbeat soul country music. It is characterized by the mix of traditional and contemporary. We see chunky riffs riding into expansive melodic spheres. And the beats give the theme an anthemic dimension. Listen Now!

This EP introduces us to Simon Magg and his unique artistry as a solo artist. He also plays with an acoustic trio that includes violin and percussion under the banner, ‘People Like Us’.
