Roman Angelos’ ‘Tropical Nites’ Sparkles with Funk/Jazz/Neo-Soul Cinematic Opus

Roman Angelos is the nom de plume of Brooklyn-based producer, composer, and multi- instrumentalist Rich Bennett. His music has an explorative pulse, circling concepts, themes, features, and emotions in ways that cast them in a more profound light. There’s also a lot of whimsy built into his style. It manifests in the fluid, genre-blurred atmospheres, especially in his latest album, ‘Tropical Nites’, where you see Latin grooves co-existing with neo-jazz, afrobeats, dazing blues, and a whole lot of funk. The instrumentals collections host a range of creative ideas and techniques that you literally won’t find anywhere else. It is so completely unique, forged with an original and visionary mind, one that embraces the beauty of ambivalence and indefinitions.

Tracks like ‘Motorbike Journey’, ‘Breezeway’, ‘Pages and Palm Leaves’, and ‘Unwritten Letters’, tell ambient stories, effusing emotion with montonal frames that see mellow instrumentals variations. The sound melts into the fabric of the mind, drenching it with scenery, soft movements, and mellow cerebral activity. It’s like drifting, free and creativity liberating. Perfect to put on while painting, cooking or other meditative activities.

On the other hand, ‘Secret Officers Meeting’, ‘Bella In Nighttown’, and ‘Dark Night At The Tiki Bar’, boast dramatic dynamism that takes you back to James Bond and Pink Panther soundtracks. The vintage ethos in these tracks are so good. It engages the mind in an active and interesting way that you find yourself entering bars, exiting town squares, hiding in shadows, and just reveling in the mystery of it.

Each track seems to create an atmosphere that compels immersions. And from the sentiments and sensibilities that you pick up from the instrumentals, the mind tends to dilate with stories and frames. Leveraging exotic film scores and library recordings of the 60s and 70s, he further patronizes this imaginative trajectory. The best way to enjoy each track is to sink into the textures, chroma, melodic continuums, and instrumental flow. That’s where the story is. Listen Now!
