POINT3NINE’s ‘High Rollin’ 2 EP’ is Abstract Hip-Hop at its Finest

POINT3NINE is where conceptual hip-hop, experimental rock, and psychedelics meet. So you can only imagine the diverse magnitude of his music. It cuts across layers and fleshes out a distinct sonic ethos. The artist debuted in 2023 with his LP, Black Fly. Since then, he has fleshed out many brackets of his aesthetic, polished his sound with bolder and more confident strokes of avant garde. Listening to him is not only a sonic exercise but a cerebral and creative one. His latest release is the ‘High Rollin’ 2 EP’; a collection that continues the work that he introduced in Part 1 (which was released in March 2024). The collection hosts six tracks that traverse spheres of rock, electronica, hip-hop, trip hop, and even street music. 

The artist loves the undefinable, the inexplicable. You’ll see a return to abstract and cryptic notions in his sound. I like to think of it as a code that reveals itself a little with every listen. Like a master puzzle maker, he leaves a lot of space for contemplation, guiding his listener only with mellow prompts. 

‘A Spot of Whiskey’ opens the collection with a charismatic rhythm. Instrumental hip-hop is fused with refracted rock and distortive textures. It is mellow, measured, and tempered with a lot of dark subtext. ‘Hey Punk’ rolls along a plane of fluid dissonance. With cool tones, merging textures, and industrial sonic agents, it encapsulates the idea contained in the title. 

POINT3NINE loves to explore a genre outside its usual context. That’s the aesthetic you’ll find across this collection. ‘Beach Funk’ is lit up with dynamic rhythms. Driven by the metallic clash of cymbals, funk rock guitar motifs, and a humming bassline, it redefines the ambit of funk in a fresh context. ‘Get Snoopy’ reinforces this context. 

‘Flower Power 2’ is an ambient flow that is as dark as it is deep. It has a blooming soundscape design that slowly arouses conceptual sentiments. Finally ‘Trigger’, a fitting end to this collection. It sports accents and features from the other tracks. Like a progressing compendium of everything that we heard till now. Listen Now!
