Neil C Young’s ‘ReWorks Vol.2’ : A Dazzling Jazz Dynamism

Neil C Young is a UK-based jazz guitarist with a vitality that rivals Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis. His tracks are a dynamic lens through which the world becomes a little more exciting and excitable. Everything happens on a brink of another thing, standing on the edge of the world kind of feeling, even when you’re dribbling your fingertips on the table in your room. It is brisk and light, playful and free like a breeze. That’s the essence of this artist. And with each track, it becomes reinforced in new and interesting contexts.

Neil’s instrument of choice is the jazz guitar. Sliding his fingers effortlessly across its strings, he crafts animated frames that pull the listener into imaginative and histrionic tales. His compositions are built with moments of slapstick, drama, movement, and emotion. In his latest release, ‘ReWorks Vol. 2’, a four-track EP, this artistic element especially comes through. Each track connects momentous evolutions of a story, like a flip book. There’s never a dull moment. Allows the mind to kick back and enjoy a sonic movie of sorts.

‘A Mouse Lived in a Windmill in Old Amsterdam’ introduces the EP. Teeming with spontaneous percussion and a generous wash of cymbals, it is designed to pop with fresh instrumentals. The artist loads it with so many incredible nuances that the mind begins to wander to the vivid scene behind the title and before you realize it, it ends as whimsically as it begins. ‘Troublemaker’ comes alive in guitar grooves and slapping beats, ascending arcs and a swirling whisk of blues.

‘What’s Going On’ is mellow and luminous. It is curious and pleasing, a perfect soundtrack for a new morning. Once it sets the stage, it drifts ambiently into contemplative moments, phases of activity and inactivity, as naturally and organically as a day playing out. ‘Miss You’ has a moody tone that transcends with aching passion, reminiscent thoughts, roaring melancholy.
