EP Review/ Alt Pop : Bad Bubble’s ‘Oh My God’
Bad Bubble is a memorable artist. His soundscapes are so distinctly refreshing that it has a power, a dimension, and an energy plane of its own. Led by the artist’s fantastical electronic ideas, or sometimes even just an imaginative place, an atmosphere, he creates music that makes you think, feel, and most importantly elevate and expand. There is priority given to the artform. You can almost sense how sacred it is to the artist when you experience the depth in the details, the thought in the rhythms, and the vision in the production. His latest EP is ‘Oh My God’, a four track collection that stupefies the listener with its melancholic dynamism and range.
‘War’ opens, an oozing track that forms in a momentous fashion. The rhythms are free and liberated from motifs. It flows like the stream of consciousness. And with vocals that enlarge and contract like a living organism, you’ll experience the emotions as if in real time.
It is immersive, extravagantly melodramatic and luminous enough to light up your mind with thoughts. This cerebral experience is carried into the next track, ‘Hogs’ and stimulated even further with remarkable synths and splashing beat lines. The vocals have the same expansive trajectory and spiralling depth.
Next up, ‘Over Here’, a track that picks up a rhythm. Emphatic beats, melodic motifs, all feeding echoing harmonies that progressively transcend into a new and fresher listening plane. Concluding the EP is ‘Gus Died’. In this we see floating pyramids of song. The piano melodies are like building blocks, climbing up an incline. And at the top of it is a vocal cloud, so beautifully lost, so achingly melancholic that it feels like a rainy day. The more you descend into it, the more you rise. Because the connection is so honest, so deep that you feel lighter and more bolstered in your heartache.
