EP Review : Coma Beach’s ‘A Madman's Dream/Mind Descending’
‘A Madman’s Dream’ opens the collection. Its visceral vocals, gunning basslines, raw riffs, and swelling rhythms instantly set the stage for the rest of the EP. The soundscape keeps growing and expanding like a balloon and the band fills it and keeps up with it with an unfailing momentum. The punk band is fringed and outfitted with many influences including hard rock, grunge, garage rock, and metal.
‘Mind Descending’ follows. It falls right in, picking up where its predecessor concluded. Cloaked in a gritty riff haze and a storm of basslines, it is a fantastic punk burn. ‘Absurd’ carves a stillness. The sudden levelness brings with it a contemplative spirit. And along with it, a melancholy as well. The instrumentals are slow and mellow. The vocals flow with it, rising and falling like a low tide pool. It pairs quite well with the bluesy acoustic rock sphere of ‘I Won’t Listen’.
Picking up midway, in tempo and energy, it paves the way to the fierce conclusion brought by ‘Jesus’ Tears’. The track circles back to the ethos of the first two tracks. So if you listen to the EP on a loop, it quite literally forms a circle of ennui, contemplation, dilemma, restlessness, and chaos. Listen Now!
