Dive Head First into The Spirited Rhythms of Songs for Sabotage in ‘CLEAN TRAUMA’

Songs for Sabotage got all revved up with gunpowder punk, 80s synth pop, and spirited rhythms for their latest album, ‘Clean Trauma’. The collection is a tumbling mixture of diverse influences that form, unravel, grow, and evolve. In many ways, it perfectly captures the elastic essence of the duo who love to stretch sonic boundaries and reach for the beyond. This album is forged to excite, in the audience, new sensations and sensibilities. Each track brings a beat that your body simply cannot resist and a refined sonic sentience. Think Beach House and Cocteau Twins blended with Cyndi Lauper and spruced with Tame Impala and The Who.

‘KILLER’ is a strong breakout track and sets a powerful precedent for the rest of the album. It is instantly bejeweled with synths. Progressively, it gains the hard textures of power pop riffs and even harder beats. And then it gets interesting. The production technique achieves a 3D effect where each genre dimension is distilled. It’s like one of those old baseball cards. The independent rhythms of the riffs, synths, vocals, and beats ring separately from one angle but in another angle, they flourish with cohesion.

‘PILLS’ is up next. It is sparked with their trademark vibrance : layered and colorful. There’s more 80s in here, and a lot more heartache. ‘FORTRESS’ is relatively measured. Its rhythm is mellow and slow to rise. But streaming through the track are so many different emotional currents. With each lick of Lina Sophie’s vocals, these resilient electronic cables are illuminated. ‘SORRY’ forms in an ethereal sphere. It’s like producer and multi-instrumental Richey Rose said let there be light. And then it was. From this brilliant space of illumination, the rest of the track flows out. The vocals are just as transcendental. And Lina’s ability to infuse it with human emotion and experience takes the cake.

‘SHATTERED’ takes us back to early 2000s dance pop icons like Rihanna, Beyonce, and Shakira. It is intense and spirited but also elevating and liberating. In ‘DECAY’ we see the return of darting riffs and punk motifs. It is used to intensify and rapidly extrapolate the dark ethos of the vocals. ‘OWEN’ is comparatively more leveled. But its dreamy vocal frames and glassy textures are laced with psychedelic motifs. Finally, ‘CRINGE’, a very Lana Del Rey-esque piece. The vocals are soft, the lyrics are dramatic but its rhythm is trance inducing. Listen Now!

The album is marked by productional brilliance and vocal brilliance. It is innovative, spell-binding, cerebral, complex, and a galaxy of music. Both Lina and Richey have done their best work in creating such spanning masterpieces. Every track is detailed and intricate, purposeful and beautifully ideated. Listening to it is like one of those experiences where you come out as a different person, or at the very least, altered.
