Album Review/ Singer-Songwriter : The 7th Gatekeeper’s ‘
The 7th Gatekeeper is a singer-songwriter and a rustic country folk artist. His music rewinds the clock, taking you back to classic musical cultures, combining it with thoughtful lyrics and evocative vocals. The essence of his music is contained in the perspectives that he forges, because that’s what changes lives, changes situations, and changes minds. It expands the human in ways that are liberating. His latest release is the ‘No One Was Saved’ album. Some of its tracks are stained with a beautiful contemplative melancholy, a rare and specific kind. It is drenching, immersive, and extraordinary.
‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ opens the collection. The artist’s cover of this classic sets the tone for the rest of the album. The song is luminous, lingering and slow, gradual. His baritones expand and contract like a lamentous accordion, taking each moment, each inflection to create a language, an emotion of his own. He essentially forges the song with a new perspective. ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and ‘One Monkey’ form in the same vein as this track. Cradled in slow blooming acoustics, his baritones stretch into a landscape of thought and emotion.
Other tracks are more dynamic, populated and gritty. In ‘Overseas’ we see a turbulent, hard rock soundscape. The riffs are meaty and the bass lines thrash like a power play. And it is incredible how the artist’s vocals transform to flow into this energy plane. If you enjoy Linkin Park, Nickelback, and Green Day, you’re sure to love these tracks. In ‘Ghostriders in the Sky’ and ‘Lovesong’, we see a darker reality, steeped in gothic elements and fantastical instrumental imagery. ‘Murder in Minor’, an instrumental intensifies these feelings with its suggestive flows and insinuating markers.
