Album Review/ Rock n Roll : Spirit Gun’s ‘The Status Quo Must Go On’

Spirit Gun is an American rock n roll band that keeps it real and solid. Their music is as sharp and bold as their name suggests. Emerging out of Norfolk, Virginia, they stick to their country/ Americana roots, infusing it into potent rock frames. There is that garage rock energy to them, hardcore especially in how they play and perform. That spark of passion that we felt each time we listened to the oldies is not only present in Spirit Gun but is present instantly. You can sense it, it rides you into spectacular heights and energy peaks, getting you groovy, sentimental, nostalgic, and riled up.

Their latest release is ‘The Status Quo Must Go On’, an album that is as real and rambunctious as they come. They say rock n roll is a state of mind. Spirit Gun embodies that. At the forefront of most tracks, we see Americana influences meshed in with hard rock textures, and garage rock authenticity. But in the backdrop, the rock n roll groove stays alive. Not just that, but it surfs the variant landscapes that cruise through.

After the intro in ‘No More’, ‘Status Quo’ sets the stage for the upcoming collection. All of everything that we’ve explored. Tracks like ‘Stasis’, ‘Opportunist’ and ‘Stand 4 Nothing’ reinforce this spirit adding on a more fuzzy, warm, riff-heavy sphere that is both contemplative and feel good. They are electric and full of showmanship, spirited in ways that make the banner proud. ‘The Heist’ is also a fun composition. With edgy, fun, playful, and strategic rhythm placements, they cast the listener in the headspace to enjoy the theme.

‘Balance’ is a more mellow track. With its light, airy, and luminous instrumentals, it spreads into a textured ambience that prepares you for the action and alternative rock of the upcoming tracks. ‘Big White Lie’ concludes the album. Its marked 70s/80s ethos is immutable. Like a Time Machine it will take you back and then fast forward you to 90s power before finally launching into a powerful climax.

The band definitely knows what they're doing. With a vision so strong and emphatic, they have a way of crafting and playing that instantly gets your attention. And keep it. That sonic charisma so effortlessly translates to the listener and makes them a fan. Come become a part of the Spirit Gun family!
