Album Review/ Folk-Synth Fusion : Rob Dobson’s ‘Be Easy’

The soft collisions of synths and folk rock is a niche that Rob Dobson claims and colors as his own. The spaces that he creates are filled with beautiful contemplations and mellow vibes. Listening to his music is like when you enter a room and it feels like home. With each verse, the feeling intensifies, gains cozy dimensions and thoughtful flows. His latest release is his sophomore album, ‘Be Easy’, a collection that not only reinforces his novelty but refines and builds on the sonic moments he laid out in his debut album. Each composition holds diversity, creative representations of emotion and expressive brilliance. Listen Now!

The album is introduced with ‘Endeavor On’, a soft floating fabric, swirling with resonance. With instrumental textures made to match Rob’s baritones, alongside the plush twinkling contrast of the synths, the track casts the listener in a reverie. We see variations of this soft, intimate style in ‘Esoteric Pantomime’, ‘In My Dreams I’m Your Man’, and ‘Until Next Time’. That quality of slowness, of immersing yourself in the emotions and thoughts of the mind is repeated across these tracks. It is qualified further with vulnerability, sentimental candor, and a dreamy romanticism.

With tracks like ‘Flange’ and ‘Love Isn’t Blind’, the artist explores the fusion of Americana with funky psychedelic synths. Especially in the former. We see a very rich presence of colorful synths that drench the listener with psychedelic patterns and elating moods. The fuzzy riffs and the sing-along grooves of the country rock all mesh into this synth stained reality. In ‘Love Isn’t Blind’, the mutations are not as active or dynamic as its predecessor. But they are lengthened for a cerebral effect, creating a classic-contemporary mold.

‘Dream Team’ and ‘Always Remember’ are feel-good, storytelling, upbeat Americana tracks. The synths are employed to infuse an electric presence, leading into bluesy solos.

The artist blurs the thresholds of the genres, and in that transitive space, crafts riveting contexts and concepts. There is that refreshing element that you encounter with his music. It is not only about the genric niche, but more about the ideas and the emotions that he addresses and interprets. Listen Now!
