Album Review : Exploding Pig’s ‘Jazz Futura’
Exploding Pig is an eclectic Austrian band. Fascinated by the diverse jazz influences across time and space, their music gets into explorative forms with undertones of experimentation and psychedelia. The group was formed in 2020 by veteran musicians to seek out a new sound and style. As a result, their discography is full of unique soundscapes with a prominent genre-bending affluence. You’ll see soul-funk, rock, and hip-hop shaping the contours of blues and jazz to create a remarkable brand of contemporary ambience. Exploding Pig has just released their latest album titled, ‘Jazz Futura’. It is a collection of twenty tracks with a runtime of a little less than an hour. It especially exemplifies the band’s sonic charisma, innovation, and creativity.
The band’s sound is deliberately fluid. It seemingly forms the crux of how they perceive and design their sonic ambience. Within each track, they launch into fantastic jazz summits after a scenic ride through versatile rhythms and whimsical atmospheres. In ‘Trentin Quarantino’, springing trumpets swim through like a conversation. Ennui and excitement form simultaneously and the funk manifests mildly in the rhythm. ‘Bob Marley Had a Shooting Range’ features funk fused with reggae. Its dilated rhythm and dazed textures are so simply psychedelic that you don’t have to think about much. Best way to experience it is to surrender to its flow.
There’s a lot of groovy rock powered tracks. ‘Licor de Nacho’ and ‘Batman on Acid’ is edgy and dramatic. It creates an atmosphere of action and adventure. The cymbal beat lines are sheathed in trumpet bass and dynamic guitar work. ‘6 inch slippers’ and ‘Who Set the Warp Drive to Super Slow’ are jazz rock compositions in which the two spheres are seamlessly groomed. Prime characteristics are visual blooms and an amassing psychedelic high.
These are set off by the acoustic rooms in ‘Britney is Locked up now’ and ‘Granny Take Your Pills’. Cast in contemplative instrumentation and boundless sensibilities, they are lilting sways that drenches you with cerebral rain. As you go further into the album, you’ll see more rock, hip-hop, and funk fleshed out with both experimental and vintage jazz arrangements. So much so that the aesthetics of it all align nicely with pioneers of novelty like Pink Floyd, The Alan Parsons Project, and The Moody Blues. Listen Now!
