Winn Rose’s ‘So Far’ Poses Creative Alt Folk Crafts

Winn Rose is a singer-songwriter and pop artist who employs magical realism as a crafting and productional style. Her music is marked by glazed acoustics, warm vocals, contemplative storytelling, and creative pop. They cast an engaging ambience; one that is reminiscent of Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo, and the like. The narratives encompass the experience of being human, touching upon instances of love, heartache, self-reflection, and loss. All with perspectives, contexts, and emotions that carry deep vulnerability, meaningfulness, and sentimentality. The Australian artist’s latest release is the album, ‘So Far’, an album that catalogs and chronicles encounters leading up to The Now.

In tracks like ‘ANGELS’ and ‘remind me’, we see luminous, nostalgic frames. While the former is a little bit more mellow and acoustically oriented, the latter enjoys a succinct pop brevity. Both these tracks beautifully carry the soul pop spectrum of this artist’s style. It is so softly youthful; sparked with its curiosity, sensitivity, and passion.

In ‘barely breathing’, the artist explores the ache of being in a long distance relationship. The dark melancholy in the vocals are set off elegantly by the lightness of the guitar acoustics. Making the echoing sonic backdrop as a vessel for heartache, she really captures the many dimensions of the experience. ‘deep dive’ forms along a similar vein. Sparked by neo-classical pathways, it is quite the evocative track.

The two interludes, ‘the water’ and ‘the mountains’ pose contemporary ambiences. They are textured with nature sounds and floating melodies that compel a contemplative mood. They set and reset the mood and headspace for the songs that follow. Perhaps these sceneries made up the creative backdrop and setting for this album.

‘in love anyway’ and ‘Rough’ stand out with a bolstered pop beat. Glassy with synths and driven by beats, it wraps up her soft pop vocals in an enjoyable vibrance. She marries alt folk with contemporary and dream pop sensibilities. Listening to the album is like wandering a meadow of these variations. In experiencing all the intricacies of her vision and craft, it feels like a part of you is returned back to you. Maybe it is a way of seeing, thinking, feeling or healing.
