Vanilla Franco’s ‘Traction’ : 50 Shades of Punk

When you think of punk, what do you think about? Joey Quinn, the man behind eclectic alt rock banner, ‘Vanilla Franco’ thinks about momentum. It is hardcore and rock solid. He infuses it, not only with power but with glamor, funk, and a whole lot of texture. And his debut album, ‘Traction’ spanningly proves his sublime range and dynamism. The nine track collection drives for an absurd mix of concepts, all coming alive in his deviant and defiant songwriting. Listen Now!

‘Building Pressure’ is the perfect introduction. With its peaking beats and brimming riffs, the track quite literally builds a punk pressure. ‘Picnic’ sets an indie rock scene. The punk is toned down but the funk manifests through the vocals. Other than that, it’s all textures and grooves. And it’s faintly hypnotic.

That’s the thing about Joey, you never know what hand you’re gonna be dealt with. But you can trust that it’s going to be good. Like this next track, ‘Good Time’. He meshes anthemic alt rock with punching punk and warping electronica. It is like a good cocktail, it blurs the contours of reality but gives you a great beat to vibe to. ‘Invisible Boys’ comes in urgent and charismatic. Its rowdy riffs and devil may care vocals rush through the body. The artist is just having fun, letting it all run wild and hazy. You can even sense a psychedelic current roaming under this one.

‘The Arena’ pursues the rhythm set up by its predecessor but it is bigger, bolder, and wider. The riffs are razor edged, slicing through basslines like a hot knife in butter. It sizzles and slides. The grooves are glamorous and the vocals are exuberant. What can you expect from a song named, ‘Monkey on a Mission’? I couldn’t answer that for you. But if you asked Joey, he would take you on a sublime odyssey through an ocean of basslines, fuzzy riffs, and a driving beat line.

It’s a party and ‘James Bond’ is in attendance. The track is tuned for action, mystery, adventure, and just charisma all the way. ‘Planes Trains’ is the penultimate song. Its hyperbolic riffs and chasmal grooves are so easy to ride. There’s a lot of chaos and dysfunction that is usually associated with traveling. But it’s instantly fun and calls for adventure. ‘Learn Something’ is the Finale. The bass grooves may be strict and commendearing but the melody lines fall like cherry blossoms in the spring. Joey creates an evolving arc with slapstick riffing and funk that just won’t stop. It’s easily our favorite with its vivid entourage of rock. Listen Now!
