Song Review/ Instrumental : Marc Soucy’s ‘Mayhem in Antrctica’

Marc Soucy’s instrumental and compositional prowess is marked with sophisticated technique and elegant vision. In his latest release, ‘Mayhem in Antarctica’, the artist casts the listener in a musical cinema. Drawing from eastern classical styles and influences, he sets the stage for the thematic scene to unfold. Oriental tones, Hindustani instrumentals and ambient flows are made versatile.

Slow and doting, the introduction gets strung into an experimental dispersion, a powerful pull. Jungle sound samples are mixed in with experimental rhythms and accents. Like a forest fire, the energy magnifies. A bolstered rock plane skates along with marching earthy beats. Then we see a modern jazz effusion, going back and forth. And like this, it all snowballs. The jazz, the cinematic screens, the rock, the electronica and the experimentals. Featuring the talent of Jeff Carano on the bass and Ray Lavigne on the drums, the song is as festive as a town fair.
