‘nry’ launch into a spectrum of rock with debut album ‘on/off’
nry is an alt rock band with a debut album. ‘On/Off’ that rivals the sonic rank and quality of bands like Linkin Park, Nirvana, and Karnivool. The seventeen-track collection is resonant with beautiful variants of rock, ranging from soul and blues rock to hard rock, punk, garage rock, and even experimental. The soundscapes are all tuned to carry a magnetic pulse and a cerebral appeal, causing the listener to embark on fantastic aural experiences.
The album is introduced with ‘System Down’. It is laden with melancholy and emo-rock influences. Characterized by a boom of riffs, beats, and vocals, the band strikes the golden ratio among the three. We also see similar palettes and design in tracks like ‘Someday’, ‘Let’s Talk it Over’, and ‘A World Collides’.
The track, ‘Outta Control’ brings an incredible flavor of punk with it. Touched by prog rock accents, the track launches into the erratic atmospheres of hardcore riffs and slapping beats. The vocals mount on this energy and drift through like a comet. Inexorable value of nry’s punk is reinforced in ‘Future Primitive’. This one is a more emphatic version with harder beats, deeper grooves, and heavier emotions. It spills into ‘Moved’ and ‘All About the Past’.

Tracks like NT, RDY, and T are experimental interludes. Simple, yet alien, the listener becomes unglued and unsaturated. In some ways, it cleanses the sonic palette and prejudice as it leads you into the next set. However, ‘Y’ is an outlier of all the interludes. The guitar instrumental is a luminous line, weaving through pensive pauses and emotive moments.
One of our favorites from the album is ‘Shoe String’. The track brings a whimsy to the album with reggae beat cycles, Latin/Central American percussion. The rhythms are enjoyable and the vocals dispel retro blues.
The versatility and dynamic sonic craft of the album speaks for itself. Every track carries a wealth of influences and flows with an unfettered range. Striking a balance between the old and bold (experimental) it is a sublime rock odyssey.
