Music Review : Jack Raymond’s ‘The Long Story Short EP’

Jack Raymond is one of those old soul musicians who sing from the soul and for it. With a few honest words and a few melodies, his music comforts and consoles the wearied world. His latest release is ‘The Long Story Short EP’. The seven tracks carve out small wisdoms, which Jack then spins with perspective and tale, into a contemplative yarn for the new world. With the evolution of society, there’s a lot of values that got lost in the cracks. And he is here to remind us of simpler times and hopeful words.

‘We’ve All Been There’ opens the album. Jack's whiskey-toned baritones spread out luminously across the valley of guitar acoustics. This scene is briefly dispersed by interludes of liquid saxophone melodies. It adds both a sonic and emotional dimension to the composition. This lilting instrumental congruence is a design we see in other tracks as well.

In ‘Harriet’, as Jack’s hollow voice grasps at melancholy, the guitar acoustics are inseparably wound with piano melodies. And yet, each one makes its own path to the emotion. The artist’s anchor is his narratives.

Drawn out of autobiographical scenes and experiences, they come to the song with real emotion. And the melodic framework is made to intuitively catch on and expand on them. This sophisticated technique is especially evident in ‘All of Me’ and ‘Make Hay’. The alt folk track, as it gains sentiment, acquired bluesy tinges, a country softness. They quiver through his vocals and add beautiful filters to his tale.

‘Water Water’ reveals a subtle drama. The artist’s vocals wander through a lover’s world. Guitar acoustics and violin melodies play in the backdrop; with beats riding suddenly into their gentle sway. ‘Money Won’t Buy Happiness’ concludes the EP. It is lit with funk rock riffs, blues croon, contagious grooves with dancing cymbal accents. Jack’s voice is raw and uncensored. He lets the texture bounce through the soundscape and mold the song into an Elvisesque composition.

The ability of the artist to engage his listeners and tell vivid stories is directly related to his adaptive vocal ability. He effortlessly conceives the right tone, energy and character to convey the essence of the theme or perspective. It proves him, not only to be a seasoned musician, but an insightful songwriter.
