Mike Masser’s ‘True Git’ is a Powerful Hard Rock Machination
‘Phoenix’ presents a hardcore introduction to the album. With splattering riffs and heavy distortions, the artist drives themes like metamorphosis, liberation, and revival. The meaty bass lines are given free will and they roam through the soundscape, elevating the empowered blooms in the vocals. And in the chorus, the sentiment is defined by an anthemic melody line.
As the album title suggests, there’s a whole lot of grit and gore built into its tracks. But there’s also grandeur and grunge glamor that tempers it. Tracks like ‘True Grit’ perfectly bring out this revealing duality.

‘Black’ is a slow grind. With devilish and droning distortions, it chews through hard topics like failure, hopelessness, and despair. Glistening with grunge and torrid with metal heaviness, it sinks into you and consumes you whole. ‘Domino’ and ‘Take a Chance on Me’ are enriching and enveloping in the same way.
Bended Knee is a drastic shift in energy and style. With light acoustics and mellow baritones, it is folk-rock attuned to the likes of Hank Williams, John Denver, and the like. It is the outlier of the album, one of its kind among the collection.
Mike Masser debuted in 2018 with the ‘Desert Sun’ album and has since released three more, including ‘True Grit’. This album is easily one of our favorites, demonstrating the cerebral appeal of true grit in rock compositions.
