Luna Motif’s Alt Rock Variance Comes Alive in ‘Tender Weapons’ EP

Luna Motif is a Dublin-based rock band with a moody, progressive style. Formed during the throes of the global pandemic, they sought to trigger a transformation with their music. So you’re likely to see themes like rebellion manifest in the most enchanting and profound way. It carries a dark underbelly that confronts the listener and compels contemplation.

In that sense, they have a marked 70s rock ethos, especially in their intention to trigger a response and reaction to the state of affairs. And in Luna Motif’s case, it is our fundamental disconnect with nature; and how our neglectful actions are paving the way for disasters.

Their latest EP, ‘Tender Weapons’ forms along this vein. It fosters great passion not only for Mother Nature, but for musical vision, technique, and execution. The band nurtures the alternative vein; marking it with creative and lofty guitar work, melody formations, and rhythm structure. The vocals play a transcendental role in forging the themes.

The first track is ‘Honeydawn’, the perfect introduction to the collection. With its abstract depth, dark skies, and atmospheric instrumentals, it petitions mankind to change their ways. They paint honeydawn as a paradise state of nature; one that is getting further and further away from us. Their twist on magical realism is interesting as they inculcate it in both musical and lyrical facets.

‘Adventure Kids’ is more edgy with an electric and pumpting rhythm. The remarkable difference between the stylings not only shows the band’s versatility but their ability to always be evolving and adapting to satiate thematic sensibilities. ‘Primal Forces’ forms with a vintage garage rock charisma. With fuzzy riffs, punching beats, and a vocal anthem, they call for attention, unity, and action.

Finally, ‘Firestorm’ is designed as propaganda. A post rock enigma is fused with alternative material and an insurgent tone. The guitar work is emphatic and unapologetic, vibrating with an inexorable power. It is quite intense. Like a firestorm, it generates heat, a fierce warmth that is reminiscent of angry forest fires and a destructive will.

Each track is so vividly different from the other, crafted to shape the thematic emotion rather than establish a one dimensional brand of music. It is alternative in the true sense of the word; so novel, original, and passionately made. This is the band’s debut EP. They are currently in the process of releasing their sophomore EP, ‘Bipolar’, teasing it song by song. Make sure to keep an eye out for it!

Luna Motif is Gerard McBride (Guitar), Christos Salaforis (Vocals), Ross Byrne (Bass), and Danny Kettle (Drums).
