Erik Connor’s ‘The Interdimensional Microwave’ : A Bizarre Sci-Fi Reality

With Erik Connor’s music, you’ll get to experience the intermingling of symmetry and dissonance. The artist’s soundscapes are usually collages and jigsaw puzzles of sonic samples that are arranged, not only with an aesthetic pulse, but also an intelligence that when decoded illustrate such unique and novel perspectives. But one thing for sure is the fact that there is no one else like Erik Connor. When you talk about modern electronica, he seems to have a knack for it, and not only that but a deep passion as well.

His latest release, ‘The Interdimensional Microwave’ is a jaunty collection of sci-fi compositions. Drawn from the retro interpretations of the genre, it is quite interesting to experience the way he cultivates it and forges it in such imaginative and futuristic dimensions. And this is not just limited to thematic ideation but extends also to its manifestation, through sophisticated sound design and technique.

The collection opens with the title track, an instantly distortive track. Bizarre and haunting, the synths are jacked to hyper-dynamic and fluid rhythms. There is no definite structure or pattern. Teeming with drastic variance of texture, tonalities, chroma, and shapes, it is quite a complexity. There are moments of discoteque that are warped and swept across. This coherence within a well of chaos is refreshing and remarkable. This pattern is something that he uses across the collection, in tracks like ‘Multifaced’ ‘Parallel Pathes’, ‘Symbiote’, and ‘Microwave Madness’.

Although in ‘Symbiote’, we see a more jazzy flavour and mellow energy frequencies. Some tracks are designed more conceptually and carry a rich thematic ambience. ‘Temperature Up/ Trousers Down’, ‘Temporal Tea Party’ and ‘Spheres’ are strung with static sound samples and mysterious dissonance. It has that unknowable quality. Think of that suggestive dimension that is left unexplored in movies. That is left up to interpretation and imagination.

On the other hand, tracks like ‘30+ SEC’, ‘Sad Ol’ Turnips’ and ‘Burnt Popcorn Smell’ have more juvenile and funky accents that playfully warp the soundscapes to carry the intrinsic energy of the themes.

It is incredible how the artist is able to take commonplace imagery and just completely transform them into absurdist comedies, abstract realities, or simply just transform their reality. We see this across the album but especially in ‘March of the Underdone Potatoes’, ‘Teevee Dinner’, and ‘Metal Plate’. The artist covers a lot of interesting ground across sound making from conception, presentation, production, and aesthetic value. Listen Now!
