Dirty Money’s ‘Vice & Virtue’ is a Turbulent Punk Grunge Masterpiece
Dirty Money is a gritty rock band that gets into the visceral realms of the human experiences. Their compositions are well formed, sludgy and grimy with the textures of hard rock, grunge, garage rock, and punk. It all comes together with an iconic personality that references artists ranging from The Who, Rolling Stones, and Queen to Nirvana, Green Day, and Foo Fighters. The band’s debut EP ‘Vice & Virtue’ marks the absolutes they operate in and the ones they staunchly reject. Each track sets out a vice and through the turbulence of it, seeks out virtue. ‘Play to Win’ breaks out the album with grand and resonant grunge. Loaded with a strong punk bedrock, it whips into formation. The vocals splatter across, scorching with the danger and darkness.‘Running from the Night’ is punk gone berserk. It fumes and heaves with momentum with bolting punk beats and sizzling riffs. Its symmetry is wound with intense chaos that rides into climax with an indestructible vigor.
‘Kilo Tango’ is so incredibly charismatic. Flushed with hefty basslines and smoking distortions, the grunge is especially powerful. The beats craft a static rhythm that supports the track without suffocating the riffs. And the riffs, placed at a full advantage, tango with the devil. ‘Ego’ concludes the track. Its grunge is seasoned with accents of rock n roll, 70s hard rock, and some very angry punk. Much like the theme, the soundscape is forms self-servingly. The guitar work is narcissistic, with self-serving riffs and revolutionary solos. And all the other elements - dirty vocals, punk beats, and hard wired basslines contribute to this abyss of power.
Dirty Money was completely formed in 2022 and consists of guitarist Mark Walker and bassist Ross Hutton, lead vocalist and lyricist Spud Hudson, and drummer Luis Silver. They are an eclectic bunch with grand ideas and tremendous style. With fluid music theories and forged rock dynamism, they plow, pound, and pack a punch. ‘If’ was their debut single, however it was released in 2021 before the band was fully formed. This EP is the first body of work that they have released as a full unit.
