Album Review/Alt Rock : Electric High’s ‘Colorful White Lies

Electric High are a Norwegian alt rock outfit with an immutable gusto and power. It doesn’t bend, don’t break, only rolls on; progressing to an ultimate plane of feeling. Kissed with passion and drunk on power, they are a force to reckon with. Their latest release is ‘Colorful White Lies’, a bolstering album, an uncontainable vessel of energy. It is alt rock in the truest sense of the word. Splayed with punk, hard rock, and prog rock across a field of classic rock foundations and rock n roll motifs, it is diverse with an effortless vigor. Imagine the energy without the strife, the pride without the fall. That’s how it feels when you’re experiencing the soundscape of this band. 

The track ‘Sun’ opens the album. It demonstrates everything that the Sun is and can be. There is heat, fire, light, and energy. Imagine riding all of these properties to their extremities, the fierce debris of that destruction. Driven by punk beats and matching basslines, it drags the listener through the wrecking ball that is the composition. It purges borders to push the boundaries till they melt away. 

We see similar energy build ups in ‘Wasted’, the charisma flow in ‘Cyclone’ and chaos in ‘Crooks’. In tracks like ‘Harder to Justify’, we experience the other end of the spectrum. A slow burn, whiskey tinged, smoky, delectable darkness that you can down in one gulp. It will burn your throat but the high is worth it. ‘Royals in Rags’ and ‘Siren’s Lullaby’ play out in similar sonic rooms. With that melting groove, scrunchy textures, and diving rock n roll, they are both retro and modern manifestations of the genre.
