Album Review/ Piano Pieces : Mortenissimo’s ‘Debussy (extended)’

Mortenissimo is a pianist and classical composer with ideas and emotions that flow out of the pages. The artist infuses his traditional classical inspirations with a contemporary pulse. Songwriting, for him, seems to be an explorative instinct, one that he uses to detail the rhythms, nuances, tones, and realities of life. Every string of melody is tinged with innate human language, expression, or feeling, which then ties into a phenomenon, and then into a frame.

His latest release is ‘Debussy (extended)’ album, a six track collection. Its pieces are contemplative, but also playful and pliant. It represents the artist’s interpretation of Claude Debussy’s work, intermingling with his musings, imaginations, etc. Perhaps it is Mortenissimo’s state of mind, altered consciousness when he listens to the legendary composer.

‘Arabesque No. 1’ opens the collection. With smooth arcs, creative inflections, and an expansive design, the track had meandering themes, leaving space for the listener to interact with the space and flow alongside it.

‘Clair De Lune’ follows. It is French for moonlight. And the composition tracks the romanticism and nocturnal mysteries of the phenomena, carrying on with mellow rhythms and floating melodies. There are rich reflective prompts as well that set the stage for later tracks like ‘Reverie’ and ‘Mazurka’.

‘Ballade’ especially brings about one of Debussy’s core stylistic themes. His sensory style and unconventional tonalities. Its soft asymmetries, wandering rolls of melody and an atmosphere of deep emotion and feeling immutably references the composer. ‘Prelude’ concludes the collection with its fourteen minute melodic sermon. The best way to enjoy it is to immerse in it, carry into its detail, its many phases, characters, and quirks. The tonal nuances and melodic flows represent the dramatics and mundanities of life simultaneously. Listen Now!
