Album Review/ Electronica : Phidippus’s ‘Prazosin’

Eric Salazar, aka Phidippus is a conjurer. Of worlds, stories, fantasies, and ideas, crafting a musical cinema around them. As an electronic artist, he leverages the range, expanse and ambit of the genre to explore new territories. These, he then develops into spectacular frames, fantastical stories and a grandeur that will remind you of period dramas and movies. Elaborate and full of details, he gives his listeners a richness that is rare. His latest release is the ‘Prazosin’ album, a collection that unites experimental electronica with avant garde ideas. And of course, there’s that theatrical horror.

‘8 Bit Horror’ introduces the collection. With a drum n bass base, he builds it up with drifting synths, soft ripples, suggestive melodies. It is layered but elegant in design and purpose. With sonic themes that develop over time, each arc is an evolution. ‘Tell Me Your Secret’ also has a similar arc, a slow yet steady mount.

The revolutions pick up and so do the rhythms. In ‘Savior’, the melodies are made more expressive and colorful. The beats and synths are more dynamic and active, striking a luminous complexity. And in ‘We Stand Together’, we see an ambient backdrop is awakened with fuzzy, crackling textures and upping beats. These accessories are harder and more emphatic in ‘Hard Razor’, a little more aggressive, but more vivid and random.

With ‘Pornography’, ‘Dummy’, and ‘I Loved to Hold Your Hand’, there’s an acceleration in the way he images themes. And blending them with striking contrasts, winded fringes, and mercurial rhythm patterns, they are all so surreal. Like they are all occurring in a whole different world, a universe that is far and foreign but tied to us by the imaginative consciousness. And with ‘Techno Phantom’, he drives the album to a cerebral climax, one that is slapping, driving, and so full of emphasis. On texture, on rhythm engagement, on visuals, and progression of energy.
