Album Review : Shane Rennison’s ‘Irrational’

Shane Rennison bestows his listeners with momentous evolution with his latest album, ‘Irrational’. Each track from the collection catalogs a moment in his life, capturing the scene, its emotion, sentiment, and headspace. Projecting it into a sonic sphere, the artist forges fantastic dimensions into it that make it all too human and all too relatable. The artist’s unique way of perception and presentation adds a niche to the listening experience that you will find yourself returning to. Composed alongside and engineered by Julian Giaimo, it is the duo’s third collaborative effort that showcases a refreshing confluence of synths, pop, folk, and rock in a way that has never been done before.

The collection is headlined by the album teasers, ‘All The Scars’ and ‘What You Need to Know’. Both tracks carry a whimsical dynamism, one that twists and turns into witty plot points that beautifully tie into his narratives. The pop is modern and new, creative with neo-classical and acoustic rock accents. We see this lithe and lilting whimsy manifest in the beatlines of ‘Too Beautiful’, and in ‘Draggin’s’ groove.

‘Irrational’ celebrates pop rock with the freshness of falling in love and its romance. Wrapped up in soft euphoria, the rhythm is feel-good and hooky. The vocals are warm and full of tale. ‘Losin’ You’ and ‘Somewhere in Albany’ are misty country folk tracks that are simply rustic. Using cerebrally calming textures, monotones, and intimate vocal lines, the artist brings the listener into the soundscape and immerses them.

Tracks like ‘Hey Hey Hey’, ‘I Think It’s You’, ‘Long Road’, and ‘Where I’m At’ have acoustics at its core. Marked by plush and passionate instrumentals, their emotion carries into the vocals and narratives.

With each of his releases, the artist builds on his sonic reputation. There’s always a level of craft, detail, or emotion that you can ride into a new high. Since his debut in 2022, his discography has been ever-growing, dedicated to authentic exploration of craft the way that suits his essence and energy. And you see it manifest so elegantly and eloquently in this latest release. Listen Now!
