Album Review : Cassava Groove Temple’s ‘Mountains of the Moon’

Cassava Groove Temple is a rhythm aficionado. He sees them as energy waves that he bolsters with evocative melodic currents and patterns. With each release, the artist seems to curate a language with rhythm. It is a beautiful conveyance with aesthetic intention, explorative tones, and intricate detailings. And they engage and immerse the listeners. The artist has just released his sophomore EP titled ‘Mountains of the Moon’. It has an experimental pulse that nicely ties in with the burgeoning ideas and rhythm designs that he lays out. He takes timeless naturalistic frames that we’re all familiar with and modernizes them.

He delves into contemporary and fluid styles of electronica and rhythm play like dubstep, techno, industrial. He conceptualizes them. There’s also a distinct psychedelic pulse to these formations. The darting rhythms, textures, and deep mysterious progressions of ‘Le Jungle’ exemplifies this. The track is an intense odyssey with the cosmic taste that is contained in the title. It is a hardcore groove.

‘Created Crane’ forms on an afrobeat rhythm base. The melodies make up the primary show, its lofi, mellow skies contrast well with the rising beatline. There’s a creative techno dimension in the track and also a lot of dance. Conjoined, they create a playful and fun rhythm to flow to.

‘OG from UG’ is instantly dramatic. There’s a cinematic retro flavor to it that mixes in with tuned accordions, afrobeats, and funky sound effects. Concluding on a more contemplative note is the title track, ‘Mountains of the Moon’. It has a distinctive funk undernote which is overlaid with mellow ambience, flute melodies, and resonant synths. And listening feels like being cast in a mystical space, full of textures, color, and outworldly presence. The flute refreshes the setting at every point, and draws the mind to tropical forests and deep green jungles. Listen Now!
