Album Review/ Alternative : BigDenBoo’s ‘The Journey
BigDenBoo is an alternative artist who views his soundscapes as a way of projecting his inner worlds. His thoughts, his feelings, his ideas, his stories, and everything in between wrapped up in a cinematic sonic consciousness that you can indulge and immerse in. There is a lot to be said about this composer and prolific musician. But he lets his music speak for him and it readily does, in volumes. To him, the most valuable thing as a composer is expression. His ability to dilate and expand it to showcase its details, its nuance and its layers are remarkable. And that’s what he revolves his stylistic endeavour around. To pose a theme with a cinematic resolve.
That’s what he does in his debut album, ‘The Journey’. It is a 22 song album with a playtime of 1 hour 17 minutes, telling stories about frames that perhaps the protagonist encounters on his journey. What this journey is, and where it leads you is something that the artist leaves completely up to the interpretation of the listener. It is interactive like that, like an immersive video game. What your mind picks up on, pays attention to, and pursues is what you’ll get out of it.
They are all instrumentals with explorative tails of melody. The artist flows into people, connections, frames of thought, ambience, emotion, and feelings. He inexplicably is able to tell detailed stories with just melodies. Across these 22 tracks, he portrays the journey from start to end, with scenery and a natural cinematic appeal. He introduces ‘The Crew’ and ‘The Journey’.
In tracks like Scott & Tyler, he gets into the two protagonists. And if one track is dark and contemplative, like ‘Back to the Sea’, the journey then leads us to a bustling port town like ‘Market Place District’ or ‘Staoslam City’. We then see camaraderie and preparation in ‘Nice Dreams Everyone’ and ‘Blades Training’. And brotherhood as they float through contrasting frames of ‘The Bright’ and ‘Entering The Swamps’. Then there’s the peak of the story in ‘The Fight’ and ‘Tyler’s Loss’. And then they return, changed men, full of growth, wisdom and a transformative emotion to carry with them. Listen Now!
