The Celtic Harper’s ‘The Carnivorine’ is an Array of Rich & Vivid Folklore

The Celtic Harper is the brainchild of composer, singer-songwriter, and harpist, Andrew Smith. The artist has just released the banner’s debut album, titled Carnivorine. It exudes with Andrew’s passion for folklore and mythology. He uses their rustic mystique to elaborately explore the essence and resilience of the human spirit. The sixteen-track collection takes its cues from highland folk set-ups, featuring whimsical violins, flutes, and harps. Underscored by modernity and imagination, it is a product of the varied influences of a range of musicians. It is vivid, vibrant, and vast. Listen Now!

The title track opens the album. Leading us in with whimsical pipes and storytelling vocals, it is an easy, warm, and feel-good experience. The pipes roam and scatter playfully, and springing around the vocals. It is a simple, yet rich composition, full of heart. Tracks like ‘William Smith’ and ‘Cernunnos’ celebrate the energy and charm of the pipes. Letting it weave and wane across the soundscape, it brings an enjoyable and frolicking folk dimension.

‘Emerald Isle’ forms note by note. With dainty keys, sublime violin tails, and gentle strings, the artist creates an intimate folk orchestra around the vocal display. ‘Because I Love You’ ‘Old Blowlight’ ‘Kelpie Fish’ and ‘Siren’ are tracks that revel in this nuanced instrumental style. Their tiny melodic details let the emotions linger and the stories spread.

‘Outlier’ is the next track. Melancholy is its star. With a minimalistic soundscape, the artist lets it all pool and spill out of the vocals. ‘Feeling Lonely in Love’ is a gentle slope of sentiment. The harp melodies infuse a quaint European charm into it, as the vocals float woefully through. ‘Last Rose of Summer’ and ‘I’m Moving On’ chronicle similar emotions, pieced together by beautiful swells of tale and tragedy. With gossamer lines of instrumentals connecting the islands of voice, it is boundless in its affectation.

The album features the talent of Andrew Smith on vocals and harp, (The Celtic Harper), Becky Taylor of Uilleann Pipes and Flutes, Alana Middleton on Violin and vocals, Sami Javid on Drums, and Gus Turner on Bass and Percussion.
