Oscilla’s ‘Drink Up The Sun’ : Idyllic, Reflective Folk

Oscilla is the alt folk banner of singer-songwriter and musician, Frances England. Her intimate soundscapes, warm with sentiment and storytelling is reminiscent of artists like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. She is a poetic creature full of creative passion and insightful narratives. Spinning them into acoustic soundscapes, she leaves quite the mark on her listeners. Her latest EP, ‘Drink up the Sun’ contains bright, luminous skies inspired by the beauty of nature and seasonal cycles. They form the backdrop for her scintillating love songs. The EP features the talent of fellow artist and friend, Omar Akrouche on electric guitars, bass, piano, sound manipulations, mixing, and production, Jason Slota on drums, and is mastered by Philip Shaw Bova.

‘Tongue-Tied’ opens the collection. Its sunny, vintage moods are perfect to elevate your summer or cradle and comfort you on a gloomy day. Oscilla’s vocals are beautifully candid as they curve with fondness as she describes her lover and the moments spent with him. It casts a feel-good indie spell in the air that carries into the rest of the tracks as well. ‘Tornado’ instantly calls up the work of Sufjan Stevens as its monotonal pastels form a delightful modern form continuum. The instrumentals all gel into her vocals to create a mellow breeze.

The title track is up next. It forms with twinkles with twilight acoustics. It forms with a dim, contemplative energy. Romanticism in this composition comes in the form of nostalgia and dreamy romance. ‘New Language From The Sky’ and ‘Dappled Light’ spread with the expanse of the sky. It reiterates the slow-brewed style of the rest of the EP. Reminding the listener of olden times, small joys, and childhood frames.

This EP is incredibly special for its elegant marriage of the old and new, when it comes to folk. Floating with stories and drenched in beautiful emotions, listening to this collection makes you fall in love, engage with it even if you might not know the subject of it. Listen Now!
