Artist Interview : Dame Zina on ‘Eau’

Dame Zina in a Father-Daughter Duo who are best described as an experimental pop and alt folk artists. With a refined sense of concept and technique they are able to fathom emotions, worlds and perspectives that you will find virtually nowhere else. Listening to their music, you’ll find yourself confronted with mystique, melody, and masterful ideation. Their latest release is ‘Eau’, a track that acts as an artistic extension to their recent album ‘Fairytales’. So dip into this immersive and sweeping track now!

1. Congratulations on the release of Eau. It is a very affecting track! What is the significance of the title and what led to the creation of this track?
Thank you so much!! eau, in french, means water. I used the metaphor of water to express feelings, the overflow of emotions. rain, waterfalls, ice... water comes in so many shapes and each feels like an emotion ! this song is about my hypersensitivity. The entire song tries to convey this strengh of emotions, that can completly flood us. I also continued this metaphor in the music video !

2. The track feels like an extension, in terms of its ethos, aesthetic and style, of your recent album ‘Fairytales’. What did you set out to explore (musically) with this track and what do you want your listeners to take away from it?
Indeed ! eau is a bonus track following our recent album Fairytales ! the whole album is about translating emotions into stories about magic, eau is probably the deepest of them all! And definitly the most personnal and intimate! I hope people who listen to my music can get comfort from hearing other people being overfloded by their emotions. By using the metaphor of water, i try to reverse the feeling of weakness that sometimes gets us whe we feel too much, and instead feel strong like a river !

3. It wouldn’t be a Dame Zina composition without the experimental or novel allure. In this, the novelty comes in the form of ethereal and mystique. How does this project the theme and drive it to the forefront?
We love to create weird things, it's probably our favorite part of creating! making unqieu music, and using it to convey emotions feels like a magic power.

4. How would you describe your brand of electronica? We see so much concept and sophisticated design throughout the track. It is so beautiful and rich.
We are very inspired by electro and rock music, and try to make it our own and exploring new sounds and assembling unusual melodies. music is an art form that offers infinite possibilities, we hate boredom !

5. Who are some of the artists that have molded or inspired both you and your father as musicians?
So many ! let's start with the classics, metallica, pink floyd, daft puck, but also david bowie, kate bush, bjork and portishead. each artist inspires a different part of our music and we wouldn't be the same without their creativity before us.

6. All your releases in the discography chronicle growth, discovery, and development. How does music liberate both of you and how does it change the non-artistic part of life?
music truly played an imporant part in our self discovery, together and respectively. i gained a lot of confidence by learning not to compare myself to other artists, and making things my own way. i can see that through time, not only did we learn to get better artists, we also gained maturity, in our writing, in my voice, in our choices!

7. Finally, if someone asked you what kind of musician you are, what would you say?
i hope to be percieved as a true creator. i want nothing more than to be original, different, even if i can't be liked by everyone !
